We’re all in this together.

The combined design and construction experience at Norman Building & Design spans centuries. You’d have to go a long way to find a company with more. Yet you barely have to lift a finger to get access to all that knowledge. From the conceptual stages through the final phases of construction, we encourage you to interact with team members directly. Each one of us is available to answer your questions, make your changes, and address your concerns throughout the process.

Why not get to know a few of them before we kick things off?

Jim Norman
Jim Norman, Founder

Jim laid the foundation for what Norman Building & Design (NBD) is today when he moved to Bend back in 1977, searching for a place to raise his young family and build exceptional homes. His passion for creating spaces that are both beautiful and functional was fueled by his willingness to listen to the desires of each client as well as his ability to offer his insights based on many years of experience.

Jim was the driving force in evolving the company to include cabinetry design and construction, interior doors and front entry systems, as well as furniture. He often has expressed that his smartest move was to bring our interior design in-house to support excellent communication between our clients and our construction efforts.

After more than four decades at the helm, Jim continues as our lead designer, but has turned over the leadership role to Brian Murphy in order to give himself more time to enjoy golf, fishing, mountain biking and all the other activities that drew him to Central Oregon in the first place.

Brian Murphy
Brian Murphy, President

Originally from Orange County, California, Brian earned his undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Economics at UC Santa Barbara, where he also fell in love with Jenny Norman, Jim Norman’s daughter.

After college, Brian and Jenny married and moved to the Bay Area where Brian worked as an estimator and project manager for a major commercial contractor. A couple of his noteworthy projects there included the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the private residence of none other than Larry Ellison, co-founder and executive chairman of Oracle.

While San Francisco had its appeal, the charms of Central Oregon lured Brian and Jenny to Bend in 2007. Having already worked for Norman as a summer intern while in college, Brian joined NBD as a Project Manager and learned every aspect of the business. He earned his MBA from Arizona State in 2010 and has since helped upgrade every aspect of the company’s operations from sales to finance and human resources.

With his proven passion for finding ways to improve NBD’s process and products, Brian moved into his role as President in 2018. He thoroughly enjoys working with the entire team to help turn bare land into dream homes for our customers.

What makes every Norman house a home is livability, which is a by-product of interior design. That’s why NBD employs two of the best in the business:  Selah Ewert and Rebecca White.

A Bend native, Selah has over 15 years of design experience and strives to create interiors that are timeless and functional. Every home she works with she brings to life an aesthetic that reflects our clients’ dream while incorporating the surrounding Central Oregon beauty. In her free time she enjoys spending quality time outdoors with her family  enjoying Central Oregon and traveling.

Rebecca White is the newest member of our design team She enjoys conceptualizing each client’s color pallets and putting together ideas to make the home truly unique and original. She is passionate about problem solving creative challenges, and making design aesthetics that truly reflect the client’s taste.

Both Selah and Rebecca love the lifestyle and year-round recreation of Bend. They have a unique ability to not only integrate indoor and outdoor living, but to welcome clients into the Norman family. Our goal at NBD is to make building your home a fun journey from the start to move in and beyond.

John J. O’Donoghue Jr.
John J. O’Donoghue Jr., Cabinet Designer

When we decided to start our own in-house cabinet design and construction division back in late 1990s, John was exactly what we had in mind as someone to take charge. His attention to detail and ability to handle multiple challenging projects with pace and precision is unsurpassed. Those who’ve had the pleasure of working with the southern California native say he is the best of the best at translating your needs into beautiful yet functional cabinets for your home, kitchen, master bath, closet, you name it. Not only does he love working on creative and interesting projects, you’ll find him incredibly fun to work with.

Sam Candland
Sam Candland, Production Manager – Furniture & Cabinets
Email Sam

Sam is one of the rare unicorns born and raised here in Central Oregon. He left the area long enough to study Cabinetry and Architecture Woodworking at Utah Valley University. But he returned to take advantage of the year-round recreation and joined NBD in 2004.

Working in our Furniture & Cabinet division, Sam takes a keen interest into each client’s lifestyle to maximize functionality into everything he builds. You will notice his pride of craftsmanship in every piece he creates.

Sean Joyce
Sean Joyce, Remodel Division Project Manager
Email Sean

A native of Florida, Sean ultimately escaped the intense heat and humidity for Bend’s incredible snow and snowboarding. And for the icing on the cake, in 2008, he landed the role of NBD’s Remodel Division Project Manager, where he gets to help folks add new life to their homes whether Norman built them or not.

In addition to helping clients realize their remodeling visions and enjoy their end product, there are three things that Sean appreciates most about working for NBD:

The consistency of the finished homes and the willingness to do things right.
How Norman homes are built to withstand the harsh Central Oregon conditions.
And above all, how so many of our clients become good friends.

Troy Brown
Troy Brown, Remodel Division Project Manager and Customer Service
Email Troy

Troy hales from a two-horse town called Vernal in Eastern Utah. Since the horses weren’t hiring, he headed northwest, fell in love with Bend, then landed his dream job at NBD in 2001. As one of our remodeling project managers, he too appreciates Norman’s high standards of construction and the feeling of working with one big happy family.

Growing up in rural Utah, where the nearest plumber or electrician might be three hours away, Troy learned to repair things around the house, which helped make him the perfect candidate to be our customer service and warranty representative. From patching drywall cracks to adjusting cabinets can fix just about anything. And if he can't fix it, he knows how to find somebody who can right away.
